The rules of the game

One of the books I’ve been reading recently is Instant Team Building by Brad Sugars of ActionCOACH fame.

This was in lieu of our first full time employee joining us (Welcome, Charlotte!)  and it had some useful hints and tips on where to start.

The main thing that jumped out of the pages for me however was a section about the Rules of the Game.

Brad says that;

“All business owners must set the Rules of the Game You must tell team members what they can and they can’t do. The business landscape is like a playing field, for every playing field there are rules, if you don’t give people rules, they go outside the boundaries.”

As we know in other aspects of our lives, in being parents, partners and friends, boundaries are important, so why not in business?

So one of the first things we did was create ours MCAD_RulesoftheGame.  It was helpful to have a starting point to share with Charlotte who now understands what the boundaries are and I’m sure that it will provides a more useful starting point as the culture of our organisation starts to develop.
